about

This is a concept album for an animated film about a mountain man and his adventures alone in the woods. I like to imagine him as a young frustrated man who doesn't really know what he got himself into but with time he matures and finds his place in the wilderness.

Runs Rabbit: he chases a rabbit through the woods trying to catch it for dinner but the rabbit is too fast and makes a fool of him

Creek Crossing: he is moving camp, wandering through the woods experiencing the beauty of the creeks, forest, and some mountain top views

Bear Tracks: he stumbles upon bear tracks only to find the bear is not too far away and he is in danger

Burial Grounds: he crosses sacred indian burial grounds, the air feels tense, his horse is scared

Wolf Dream: he has a strange dream about wolves surrounding him and trying to kill him

Breakfast by the Fire: he wakes from his dream relieved and enjoys a fire with breakfast

Hot Springs: he stumbles upon a natural hot spring and relaxes in the water day dreaming and letting his worries melt away

The production for this album was really unique. I have never made anything like this before this album or since this album. The songs are sequenced electronically but they are made with found sounds. Most the synthesizer sounds were sneakily recorded in music shops because I couldn't afford a synthesizer at the time and I didn't really know how to use effects and synthesizers in music software. So I would record the synthesizers and then chop up and change the pitch of the samples. All the effects were done by exporting the individual tracks and processing them through guitar pedals and my 24 track tascam recorder which also had built-in effects. Some songs feature recordings of my personal adventures and also samples from a VHS of Jeremiah Johnson. I think the horse noise from burial grounds was an actual horse I recorded at my moms house in Montana. I had a short relationship with a girl who was in school for animation and we had planned to make this film together until we broke up. I think she left me for her teacher or something. I was like 18 or 19 years old at the time.
